In late January 2011, in the framework of the Third Conference on the Prevention and Treatment of Drug Addiction in the Workplace, presented the results of 2008 survey on the consumption of psychoactive substances in the workplace in Spain. This survey corresponds to one module of the Household Survey on Alcohol and Drugs in Spain (AGES) 2007-2008 conducted by the Government Delegation for the National Drug Plan (PND) to a total of 15,071 people aged between 16 and 64 years, both active workers and unemployed with experience work.
As detailed in the press release has been published in the own website of the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality (MSPS), the most relevant results are:
Alcohol and snuff are drugs that have a higher prevalence among the working population. Among the illegal substances, cannabis and cocaine powder are those with a higher rate of consumption.
In relation to age and sex, men consume more substances than women, except in terms of hypnosedatives. And consumption is mainly found among young people (16-34 years).
Regarding employment status, men are unemployed as compared to more consumption that are active. By contrast, unemployed women only significant differences were found regarding the hypnotic. The sectors in which there is a higher rate of consumption are, in general, agriculture, fisheries, livestock, hospitality, construction, transport and trade.
Job satisfaction also appears as a relevant variable, since both men and women who declare themselves dissatisfied with their jobs consume more cannabis. Similarly, those who perceive they have poorer working conditions in terms of pay and security have a higher consumption rate hypnosedatives, cannabis and cocaine.
Similarly, those whose jobs involve a higher level of danger or arduous nature and those who are exposed to more psychosocial risk factors have a greater prevalence of hypnosedatives, cannabis and cocaine.
Indeed, as acknowledged by almost half of the surveyed population, consumption of substances in the workplace is a major problem because you can not only adversely affect performance, but also may adversely affect relations between partners and, therefore, in the work environment and increase the risk of accidents. Faced with these data, it is significant that only 20% of respondents say that their work known to a colleague with these problems.
These data are significant for to know the real situation of the workplace in Spain in the consumption of substances, from it, identify the needs of workers and develop policies and strategies to prevent substance abuse and improve treatment. Even in the press release stresses that Espí Nuria (Government delegate to the NDP) "has called for promoting programs including drug prevention in the general policies of prevention of occupational hazards, an initiative that would very necessary, since 84.5% of respondents say they have not received any information or programs to prevent substance abuse in the past year.
